Boy in Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne

This is a very moving book, I recommend it to Year 6 readers because of its adult content.
The main character is Bruno who one day comes home to find his father, a Nazi general and his German mother packing ready to move house because of his father’s promotion. When they arrive Bruno is shocked at the state of the house and misses home and having friends to play with. When he looks out of his bedroom window he is also shocked, as behind a huge fence at the bottom of his garden stands a concentration camp. When he makes an unlikely friend, considering his parentage, things start to go horribly wrong…

Golfing Girls

I play golf at Brokenhurst golf club.
When you play golf you have to have a handicap,
(Girls: 36 and Boys: 28 at the most). Your handicap determines how many shots you get and how well you play. I cut mine from 32 to 29 last Tuesday.

There are lots of competitions you can enter, some in teams and some on your own.
Last Saturday I played in a competition with one of my mum’s friends. The competition was the Ping Four Ball Better Ball. We took the best score on every hole and tried to get the most points. My Mum and her partner had got to the Grand Final two years running and were going for a 3rd.

My team ended up with 41 points but so did my mum’s team, oh no! This meant it went down to countback, counting back to see how many points each team had managed to get. On the back 9 we had the same amount of points, back six we had the same amount of points and the back three we had the same, but my team won on the last hole!

I found out a few weeks later that because of our score I got to the regional finals! I was so excited as we ended up six under par and came 21st out of 72 teams!

Let’s hope I get to the Grand Final like my Mum has for the last two years running!!

An Interview with Clare Kennedy from the Daily Echo

The Orchard School Journalism Club asked a reporter from the Daily Echo if she would like to come to our school. Her name was Clare Kennedy and we asked her some questions about being a reporter and her job. Here are some that we thought of:

Firstly, we asked her how reporters think of stories. Clare replied,“We usually find our stories from the services (Police, Fire Brigade and Ambulance), meetings, the local courts and sometimes, people just phone in with stories.

Secondly, we asked her; how do you write an interesting story.
She said,“Always use the five W’s, What, Why, When, Where and Who. The intro should be small and tell you straight what it’s about.

Next we asked her; how do you encourage the reader to read on? She said, “It has to be interesting and has to make sense. It also needs a bit of flavour added to it.

After that, we also questioned Clare about how long it usually takes to write a good story. Clare told us that it could take from one minute to one week and you must get it done extremely quickly.

Finally, we asked Clare if she ever worked in pairs on stories. She stated that reporters usually work alone.

We found our first interview exciting and interesting, and very useful because it helped us learn how to write a story like the professionals do!

How to draw a cartoon rabbit

Begin with the head. Very lightly draw a couple of ovals

Now rub out the middle bits and join the edges together smoothly to make a head shape.

Next we will add the bunny's ears which are simple blobs. Remember that they go behind the head, so don't forget a little overlap

The body is another blob, like a circle that has been squeezed at the sides.

Add the arms and the legs .

And finally add some paws and a face !

GOOD LUCK!!!
